M27 Commuting from Fareham: Junctions and Alternatives
Junction 9 serves Segensworth and the business parks around it, and Junctions 10 and 11 serve the areas around Fareham town. The Junction 10 upgrade is due to finish in autumn or winter 2026.
Fareham Borough Council places most business areas around M27 Junction 9, with Fareham Industrial Park and Fort Wallington between Junctions 10 and 11. National Highways expects the Junction 10 upgrade to finish in autumn or winter 2026, and Hampshire County Council announced a phased opening from mid-September.
Which M27 junction do I use for Fareham?
Fareham Borough Council's business parks page is the clearest official description of how the junctions map onto the borough. It says the largest concentration of Fareham's business areas is around Junction 9, including the Segensworth employment area south of the motorway, Titchfield Park, and Solent Business Park immediately north of the junction.
South of the M27 between Junctions 10 and 11 the council lists Fareham Industrial Park, Fareham Heights and Fort Wallington. It places the Cams Estate about a mile from Junction 11, and says the A32 Wickham Road corridor includes Furzehall Farm and The Potteries. Portchester Park and the Murrills Estate are listed near the borough boundary along the A27, and Newgate Lane a mile south of the town centre. Put simply, Junction 9 is the one for Segensworth and the business parks around it, while Junctions 10 and 11 are the ones for the areas around Fareham town. Check a map for your own street.
What is the latest on the Junction 10 improvement?
The upgraded Junction 10 is built to support the Welborne Garden Village north of Fareham, and Hampshire County Council is delivering it with National Highways, which runs the M27. National Highways' scheme page says it includes a new underpass beneath the M27 west of the existing junction, extra slip roads and a redesigned westbound exit slip road, with work under way since October 2024 and completion expected in autumn or winter 2026. It also records the full M27 closure between Junctions 9 and 11 from 24 December 2025 to 3 January 2026.
National Highways says the scheme has had ongoing overnight closures between Junctions 9 and 11 since March 2025. Which slip roads are open and which restrictions remain can change week to week, so check Hampshire County Council's M27 Junction 10 pages before you plan a trip.
Which roads link Fareham to Portsmouth, Southampton and Gosport?
Road journey times vary with traffic and roadworks, so this section sets out the public transport options for each direction.
For Gosport, First Bus lists the Eclipse E1 and E2 as Fareham to Gosport, and routes 5 and 9 on the same run, as set out in our Fareham buses guide. For Portsmouth, First Bus lists route X3 as Fareham to Portsmouth and route 3 as Fareham to Southsea, and trains run from Fareham station to Portsmouth Harbour. For Southampton, South Western Railway's page names Southampton Central as a connection from Fareham, and the train stations guide covers the three stations. First Bus also lists X4 and X5 as Southampton to Portsmouth services. For the A32 to Gosport and the A27 along the coast, use National Highways and the live traffic tools below, because roadworks and incidents change which route is quicker.
Is there a park and ride near Fareham?
The park and ride most relevant to Fareham drivers heading east is Portsmouth Park and Ride at Tipner Lane, Portsmouth, PO2 8AN, just off junction 1 of the M275. Its PR1 service runs daily to The Hard Interchange via the city centre, except on Christmas Day. The page gives opening hours of 6:30am to 7:45pm Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 7:45pm on Saturday and 8:30am to 6:30pm on Sunday. There is no overnight parking, and the car park has a height limit of 2.1 metres. Check the page for fares. There is also a seasonal PR4 service for the Great South Run. The site is in Portsmouth, not Fareham, so it suits drivers heading to Portsmouth rather than Southampton.
Where can I find cycling routes?
Fareham Borough Council publishes a Cycle Map of Fareham as a PDF, listed under its A to Z index. The map is the council's own guide to its cycle paths, so check it for current routes.
How do I check live traffic on the M27?
National Highways runs the M27 and publishes live travel updates showing current delays, incidents and closures, plus a planned roadworks tool where you enter the road name and travel date. Check it before you set off, especially while temporary restrictions remain around Junctions 9 to 11.
What else should commuters know?
Rail replacement buses between Fareham and Portsmouth Harbour were running on the weekend of 3 and 4 October 2026, according to National Rail, which shows how a rail problem can push more people onto the roads. If you are weighing up the options, our town centre parking guide covers where to park in Fareham, and our Welborne garden village guide explains the development the new junction supports.
